STOCK STUDIO

Design your own
film stock.

Start from any stock and change the film itself: its layers, crystals, chemistry and dyes. Share what you make with the community.

Build a film that never existed

Open any stock down to its curves and crystals, change anything, and Emulsion simulates the film you made.

Everything you can change

Characteristic curvesSpeed ±3 stops, contrast, toe and shoulder. Change one layer's contrast for colour crossovers, or drag the curve freehand.
Spectral sensitivityHow the film sees colour. Shift each layer's peak up to 40 nm, widen or narrow it, push a layer towards infrared.
DyesThe colour each layer forms. Move each dye up to 30 nm, change its width, and set how much it bleeds into its neighbours.
Film stackReorder the layers, set their thickness and the yellow filter, choose crystal shape from cubic to flat T-grain, acetate or ESTAR base. Simulated photon by photon.
Crystals and grainGrain size in one slider, or every crystal constant: radius, spread, density, photons to develop, fog. Then fit the crystals to a granularity curve.
Sharpness and chemistryLight scatter, dye-cloud size and DIR edge effects per layer, fitted to an MTF curve or set by hand. The full layer-to-layer interimage matrix.
Halation and glowRem-jet, dyed undercoat or no backing at all. Strength, radius and threshold, plus a mist-style diffusion filter.
DevelopmentPull two stops or push three, from Kodak's measured push curves: contrast, speed and grain move together. Masked or unmasked negative.
Camera defaultsGauge from Regular 8 to IMAX, daylight, tungsten or any colour balance, the scene light and thirteen lens filters.
Print stocksBuild your own print film too: its curves, its dyes, how dense grey prints, and the projector lamp it is shown under.
Your own dataTrace a datasheet and drop the CSVs in, part by part. Mix and match: one stock's dyes with another's curves.
Checked as you goEvery curve is validated: ranges, axes, swapped layers, broken monotonicity. A stock that cannot be physical will not build.

How it works

  1. DeriveStart from any built-in stock, or from nothing. Every part you leave alone comes from the base.
  2. Preview liveThe real Emulsion engine renders a test scene or your own frame. Wipe between the original and yours, and inspect the grain at 8×.
  3. BuildAbout fifteen seconds to compile curves, physics and print timing into a stock.
  4. Use it in ResolveReload Stocks in the plugin and it appears beside the built-ins, on every gauge and print.
  5. ShareComing soon: publish your stock to the Emulsion community, or install someone else's in one click.

DAY-FOR-NIGHT 500T

Made in Stock Studio

Tungsten 500T shot in daylight with no 85 filter, underexposed 1.5 stops and printed dark, as a lab would for night. Everything goes cold and moonlit by physics alone.

Made in Stock Studio

A 1970s-style tungsten emulsion: slower, with compact crystals, older dyes and weaker interlayer effects. Softer, grainier, earthier colour.
